According to the legend that the Yellow Emperor wanted to choose twelve animals to form part of the court guard and so he organized a race: whoever arrived first, would have a higher rank.

  • The cat asked the rat to wake him up, but the rat forgot and therefore the cat is not part of the zodiac.
  • The one that was in first position was the ox, but the rat, who wanted the first place, climbed on his back and thus arrived before the ox.
  • The tiger and the dragon were assigned as gods of the mountains and the sea, which placed them behind the rat and the ox.
  • But the rabbit wanted to have a higher rank, so he overtook the dragon and got the fourth position.
  • The dog, which had bitten the rabbit, was punished with the second last position .

This is how the order we know today was formed: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
